Helicopter Rig

Tackle Required:

Stop Beads/Shock Beads

Must be able to slide over the Leadcore withou moving freely. Is used to keep your Chod Rig from moving around too much.

Leadcore Leader

45lb Breaking strain. ESP's leadcore works perfectlyand the colours match almost any types of surface that you will be fishing.

Lead

Depending on the distance that needs to be cast a weight between 1 and 3oz will work perfectly. The longer the cast the heavier the weight but don't over do it either. Torpedo Leads are perfect for long distance casting.

Easi Clips

Can also use Speed Links.

Buffer Bead

Flexi Ring Swivel

Size 11 or 12. This swivel will be used for the Chod to be able to run along the Leadcore without getting stuck.

A step-by-step guide showing you just how to tie your very own Helicopter Rig.

In order to make the Helicopter Rig you will need a spliced Leadcore Leader. You can use pre-spliced Leadcore Leaders or if you choose you can splice your own Leadcore. If you have never spliced before and would learn how to do it or if you just need a refresher course then please follow this link.

Moving the beads on the Helicopter Rig

Tie the Leadcore with a loop-to-loop

To make the Helicopter Rig you start by attaching your lead to the Leader. Always remove the swivel from the lead before attaching the lead to help streamline things. You can use a Q-Ring, Speed Link,or an Easi Clip, or any other quick change swivel or clip you prefer, to attach the Leadcore to the Lead. Another way to do this is the loop-to-loop way, as shown in the picture above. Push the loop end of the spliced Leadcore through the clip on the Lead. Push the swivel part of the Leadcore through the loop and tighten. Doing it without the clip might help you when you have no clips nearby but the down side is that you won't be able to exchange the Lead size without having to take everything off the Leadcore.

After you have attached the Lead slide a Buffer Bead (A) over the Lead and the Swivel, if you used one, to make everything streamlined and to stop the Hooklength from getting tabgled up in the Lead. You don't want to catch a big carp only to have it getting snagged up in weeds because the Lead wasn't properly covered. The Buffer Bead also works as a stopper when playing the Carp, preventing the stop bead and the Chod from getting tangled up with the Lead when fishing with a Chod Rig.

All of the Helicopter Rig Parts

Next get the Hooklength (B) that you will be using with the Helicopter Rig. A Hair Rig, Chod Rig or what ever else you choose to use. Using a Baiting Needle thread the two Tapered Beads (B) and the Chod on to the Leadcore. Move them up the Leadcore to where you want them. When threading the Tapered Beads make sure that the tapered ends are always pointing away from the Chod. One tapered section will point to the Lead and the other one will point to the main line.

Thread the Beads on a Baiting Needle

After you have threaded the Bead and the Rig on to the Leadcore thread a small piece of Silicone Tubing (C), about 5mm long and 0.75mm in diameter, on to the Leadcore Leader. Acording to how deep the Silt or Weeds are you will need to move the Silicone Tubing. Do this very carefully so that it doesn't tear. Slide the top Bead, the Bead closest to the Main Line, over the Silicone Tubing to help keep the Bead in place. This will stop the Bead from moving during the cast.

One thing that you have to check is that the Bead is able to come free off of the Silicone Tubing without too much effort. If the Bead isn't able to come loose then the Carp will not be able to rid itself from the Hook if the leader has broken off of the main line and the Rig is thus not Carp Safe. In this case you will need either a bigger Bead or thinner tubing. Please always make sure that the Bead can easily come free from the tubing before using the rig.

Then you are finished and ready to go fishing. Enjoy.
